On Wednesday the 11th of April, we had our Fáinne exam. The Fáinne is an oral Irish exam. We collected old stories from the schools collection from Duchas.ie . We spent months preparing for the Fáinne. My project was on local landlords in Killen, Tynagh and Eyrecourt.

An Fáinne
I am doing a project on 'The Local Landlord' based on the enteries from 'The Schools Folklore Collection'. The information comes from enteries from Eyrecourt, Tynagh, and Killeen schools.
In Killeen National School, Christina Breheny wrote about the distract landlord, Clanricarde, who was viewed as a bad landlord. "He was looked upon as a bad landlord". Although there were not many evictions locally, there was many in neighbouring areas such as Portumna, Woodford and Gortanumera. Sometimes when people were evicted they had no choice but to live in old out houses. Clanricarde used to give people very short notice for them to leave their homes.
Where as Pauline Burke from Tynagh National School, wrote about their local landlord, the Earl of Westmeath. He was also seen by the locals as a very bad landlord. The late Earl of Westmeath evicted many families. "Out of one farm he evicted twenty six families and he left them homeless". He would take peoples land and divide it in two for his two sons. Tenants used to have to do work for him such as cut his hay and draw his turf using their own horses.
In Eyrecourt, the local landlord was Mr. Briscoe Eyre of London. He spent a lot of his time in London, and he had several clerks and agents watching over his properies. "He was one of the 'Eyre' family who had been living on the dietriel". There was two families evicted from their homes in Fearmore, they were the 'Lynhams'. Martin Killen was also evicted from his home. When Mr. Briscoe evicted people he never divided the land and it was then passed down to his son, Ernest Horamann.
All of these enteries were similar as they all spoke of how the local landlords were unfair. Each person writing their essay spoke about the landlord evicting people without a proper reason, explanation and very little notice. One main difference between the landlord in Eyrecourt, Mr. Briscoe Eyre of London, and the landlord in Tynagh, the Earl of Westmeath, was that the Earl of Westmeath would divide land and give it to his ons but Mr. Briscoe never divided any land.
The information that I found on Duchas.ie gave me a great insight on the local landlords and how tenants were treated around where I live. I gathered this information from accounts from Tynagh, Eyrecourt and Killeen.
